“Willy and the No Names” - (1977)

Over the Queens birthday weekend in 1977, Deb Manderson, David Page, Heino Saarelaht and Gary Shaw moved into the Yarraville Community Centre.

The large two story building had previously been a primary school and was slowly being converted for community use - Westcom became one of its early partners.

The plan was to record ten songs - seven of them originals written by David and Heino.

Whilst setting up the temporary sound studio, a stray dog wandered in . . . he was given water, some food and seemed to like the surroundings.

“Charlie” as he became known, stayed for the four days providing added security as the four members from Turtle began work on the second floor of the otherwise deserted building.

Gary was the sound engineer - operating the two tape machines, mixing the microphones live and taking photographs.

This clip starts with Deb Manderson from an interview conducted in 1993 and contains small samples from some of the songs recorded along with the photographs taken by Gary.
