Edition 6
Deb Manderson

It is early 1975. On a day out driving with her brother Rob and with nothing particular in mind, Deb Manderson found herself thrust into the world of videomaking. Rob had suggested they drop in on Turtle Video (Altona).

While there, Robin Kenny, a friend of Rob’s, invited her to play the part of “the girlfriend” in his latest production. Deb quickly found herself involved.

Spending time at the centre on Robin’s shoot, Deb was soon making small dramas with Gary Shaw and the Channel Four team. Shooting scenes in the city, the airport and around Highpoint West. Deb enjoyed the team spirit and the feeling on a shoot, doing something “special”, something most people never have the chance to do.

Deb Manderson (1976)
“I always felt ……… we were doing something really important” . . . “Some days we had nothing to do, so we just made up a script and made a film just for the fun of it, it was a really big part of my life . . . I don’t think you can make people understand though how good it was” (from an interview with Deb Manderson in 1993)

Although Deb thoroughly enjoyed the acting experience, her real and undeniable passion was ………………………..
to sing!

Over the Queen’s birthday long weekend in 1977, Deb, David Page, Heino Saarelaht and Gary Shaw set up a temporary recording studio in the Yarraville Community Centre. Using two reel to reel audio tape machines and the six input three channel stereo mixer, ten songs were recorded over the four day period. Later that year, Deb and David Page mimed to two of those tracks for the songs in the ‘Last Three Years’.

Deb continued with her singing and went on to perform with local bands in the area.

“I’ve got so many good memories and it was just a great time in my life, I loved it”

In 1990, Deb was asked to play a lead role in ‘Scarless - The Movie’. With a young daughter and her regular weekend work, the time commitment that would be required wasn’t possible so Deb had to decline the offer. Later Deb did accept the role of hosting the introduction to the movie.

“I was wrapped when I heard you were going to make another movie . . . excited . . . I wanted to be a part of it”

Sidenote

Turtle Video had always had music in its veins and on many occasions there would be impromptu sing-alongs; sometimes right in the middle of an equipment booking it seems.

The logbook from 21st June 1975 reads- Ken Shawland came: was having trouble with his portapak from Hawthorn Teachers College. David Page fixes it! Had sing-along (with) David P, David Gray, Heino (and) Ken Shawland. What are we a video centre or music centre? Music centre of coarse!(sic) Booked out battery for Ken.

Annette Pryke

The female lead in ‘Scarless - the Movie’ was vacant. The role, based on the part played by Paula Morgan in ‘Why Me?’ needed acting strength and a serious time commitment.

Sue Manderson had acted in amateur theatre and had good connections within the local scene. Sue was asked if she knew anyone who’d be willing and committed to take on a project like this and without hesitation she recommended Annette.

Thus Annette’s involvement in videomaking began.

Annette was quickly brought in, shown the original ‘Why Me?’ and briefed on the project. From day one, Annette was fully committed to the project. She fitted easily into the small cast and crew and was always ready to lend a hand in any way she could.

Annette took to screen acting as if born to it. She found herself teamed with lead actor Gary Shaw. Their common background in live theatre proved invaluable. Seeking to achieve a professional standard, they would be enthusiastically rehearsing, between scenes, their lines for the scene coming up.

The production of ‘Scarless’ could never have succeeded without the dedication and commitment of people like Annette.

Like Deb, Annette’s real passion was undeniably …………. to sing!

Annette’s enthusiasm to help out and be involved led to her band entertaining guests at the premiere of ‘Scarless – The Movie’.

Annette’s passion for music soon turned into her fulltime career and in latter years the connection continued when Gary, Heino and Rob Stewart produced promotional DVD’s for her band the “Soul Divas”.
